As Technology Advances Barriers to Accessibility May Arise
Cordless phones have been covered by the Hearing Aid Compatibility Act of 1989 since the law was first passed. Consumers with hearing loss have been able to use their telecoil-equipped hearing aids with cordless phones quite successfully. However, cordless phones have “gone digital” and are now causing interference with hearing aids. Consumers have told us that 2.4 GHz, 5.8 GHz, and digital spread spectrum cordless phones are causing particular problems. Some models of phones even have disclaimers on the box that they may not be usable with hearing aids, even though they are required by law to be hearing aid compatible.
SHHH has brought this to the attention of the FCC and requested that the law be better enforced. If you have tried to purchase a cordless phone and found that you cannot use it with your hearing aid please tell us. Send the following information to advocacy@hearingloss.org :
