EIN FAQ - Understanding Your EIN (Complete booklet in PDF)

What is an EIN?

EIN stands for employer ID number.  Every bank account that is opened is either a personal account which requires a social security number or a business account that requires an EIN.
An EIN looks like this:  15-0000456  (two digits with a dash followed by 7 more digits.

How to determine if what type of account you have now:

If you currently have a bank account for your chapter, is it in the name if an individual or is it in the name of the Chapter?

If it is in the name of a person, you have a personal account.  That person can be liable to pay taxes on all money deposited through the year.  This account should be closed ASAP and obtain an EIN and open a new account.

If the account is set up as a business with an EIN then only the chapter would have any liability and in most cases there would be none.  As a chapter of a none profit there would be no taxes due.  If you do not have the EIN, it is possible for the treasurer to ask the bank for that number.

How do I get an EIN?

Getting an EIN is very easy.  There are no fees or charges of any kind.  There are three way to obtain an EIN.

  1. The quickest and easiest way to get an EIN is online.  Use the EIN Online Assistant  https://sa1.www4.irs.gov/modiein/individual/index.jsp and obtain your EIN in a matter of minutes.
  2. The Second quickest way to obtain an EIN is to call your local IRS office.  Looks in the U.S. Government section of your local phone book.
  3. The other way is to complete the form and mail it in. If you are not on dial up for you internet I can send you the form via e-mail or you can download it from the IRS Website.

I have my EIN, what else is needed to open a bank account?

You can open a bank account using Hearing Loss Association providing you are a fully recognized chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of America.  Having been fully recognized you should have received your chapter logo.  The bank will want to know about your organization and will accept a copy of your chapter bylaws or standing rules.  If you have neither, you will need to prepare one of these documents.  Samples of both of these documents are available either on the leadership support page on the web or you may request this document from Chapter Development.  The bylaws or standing rules must be dated and signed by the current leader/President and the treasurer.  This should be all that the bank will need to open an account.

We already have an account but it is in the name of Self Help for Hard of Hearing People, Inc. (SHHH) and we need to change it to our new Hearing Loss Association name.

For instructions on how to address the name change with your bank please refer to the document on the leaders support page:  Bank and IRS Name Change
