SPECIAL WORKSHOPS FOR PARENTS AND EDUCATORS – THURSDAY, JUNE 17, 2010
This year we saw a marked increase in the number of parents of children with hearing loss participating in the Walk4Hearing™ - their search for information and others with common interests brought them to twenty-one Walk events across the country. We are pleased to offer two very special workshops in Milwaukee:
What Children with Cochlear Implants Need at School
( Download complete description in PDF ) For Parents and School Professionals at the HLAA Convention in Milwaukee Thursday, June 17 8:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.
Registration and coffee at 8 a.m. Room 202AB at the Midwest Airlines Center (Mezzanine Level)
Workshop Description
With the majority of children with cochlear implants now attending school in public or private mainstream classrooms, parents and school professionals should be prepared to explain and address the child’s needs. This course will review key topics that can help achieve a favorable classroom environment and provide guidance for the regular classroom teacher. Although the focus will be on children with cochlear implants, some of the content is relevant to the needs of any child with hearing loss. Among the topics to be addressed are:
FM systems
Classroom acoustics
Best practices for teachers in the classroom
Roles of various team members including classmates
Cost - The workshop fee of $50 includes extensive handouts and morning refreshments as well as entrance to the HLAA Exhibit Hall on the afternoon of the workshop. This workshop is free to those registered for the full convention. Register online or print registration form.
Panel Discussion for Parents of Children with Hearing Loss Thursday, June 17th
1:30 p.m. – 3 p.m.
Room 203AB at the Midwest Airlines Center (Mezzanine Level)
The Walk4Hearing™ has attracted many parents and their children to seek out people with hearing loss and to learn from each other. This interactive presentation will bring together parents of children with hearing loss to discuss and share experiences with hearing aids, cochlear implants, services in the school system in their respective communities, and suggestions on how to work with school officials to obtain an appropriate education for their children of all ages. Learning how others have worked with their children to develop good communication skills and how to cope with the effects of a child’s hearing loss on the entire family will be discussed. Laws that impact on the child’s education and their right to appropriate access will be presented.
All parents, grandparents, and older age children are welcome to attend. There is no additional fee for this workshop.
Get Ready to Rumble at the Harley-Davidson Museum® - Friday, June 18th Even if you are not a biker, you simply must experience the Harley-Davidson Museum®! Convention 2010 attendees are sure to be inspired by this year’s keynote speaker, Bill Barkeley.
Being deaf-blind doesn’t slow him down in the least - Bill recently completed a climb of Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, and he’ll be leading a group of young adults to the Peruvian Amazon, July 8 ~ 17, 2010, as part of the partnership of Global Explorers and Hear the World. Bill is on the executive committee of the HLAA Grand Rapids Chapter, and he is past-president of the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Bill also serves on the Board of Directors of Metro Health Systems which is the fourth largest employer in the Grand Rapids, Michigan area.
