Topic: FCC Update on CVAA and Closed Captioning

The past four years have been very busy at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).  In 2010, President Obama signed the Twenty-First Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act (CVAA) into law.  This landmark legislation established new mandates promising greater access to telephone, television and Internet technologies by people with hearing loss.  From 2010-2013, the FCC worked on approximately 10 sets of rules to implement the new requirements, taking swift and comprehensive action to put into place requirements addressing Internet-based captioning, emergency access, accessible video equipment, and digital and wireless communications.

This year, the FCC’s momentum continued.  In February 2014, the FCC took unprecedented action to ensure the provision of high quality captions on television programing to ensure full TV access by all viewers.  Learn how these new laws will affect your lives in this workshop presented by an FCC official that spearheaded the drafting of the CVAA and helped to oversee these various rules.

Join her for chat about HLAA State Chapter Coordinators, roles, expectations, communication and other topics of the day. We realize everyone might not be able to make this time slot, but this is the first of many discussions with state coordinators through webinars and at HLAA Convention 2014. The goal of the webinar is to hear from coordinators in the field and begin to build a program of strong leaders where the HLAA national office supports their work. It is the coordinators who are the ones in the states with a close connection to chapters either by supporting them or starting new ones.

Topic: How to Start a Hearing Loop Initiative in Your Community

Hearing loops, wireless systems that broadcast audio wirelessly to hearing instruments and cochlear implants equipped with telecoils, are becoming more prevalent at theatres, churches and across the U.S. thanks to the support of consumers, audiologists and audio engineers. Hearing loop installations are most successful when the persons who use hearing aids, audiologists and hearing instrument specialists, as well as the audio-acoustics companies/hearing loop installation companies all team together. The presenter will provide practical suggestions about how to forge the support in your area, and will share her advocacy materials (PowerPoint slides, handouts and PDF files of articles written for and by audiologists on looping) via Dropbox with each attendee, to help you be an educated hearing loop consumer and get your community in the loop!
