Our first meeting\, led by Michelle Hu\, Au.D. will focus on what families should know after their child has been identified with genetic hearing loss—including what the diagnosis means\, what steps to consider next and how genetic hearing loss may differ from other types of hearing loss. \nWhether you’re just beginning to navigate a genetic hearing loss diagnosis or further along in your journey\, you’ll have an opportunity to learn from an expert\, connect with other parents and find support in a community that understands. \nThe remaining 2026 meetings will be held at the same time on the following dates: October 22\, November 19 and December 17. \nMichelle Hu\, Au.D.\nMichelle Hu\, Au.D.\, CCC-A\, is a pediatric audiologist\, speaker\, author and founder of Mama Hu Hears. She also happens to be a bilateral cochlear implant user\, which means she’s spent her life sitting in both the patient chair and the provider chair. \nFor more than 16 years\, Michelle has helped children and families navigate hearing loss through diagnostics\, hearing technology\, cochlear implants and family-centered care. Today\, she shares that expertise with audiences around the world\, helping professionals move beyond the audiogram to better understand the families they serve. \nWhen she’s not speaking or in clinic\, you’ll find her creating educational content for the Mama Hu Hears community\, writing resources for hearing parents of children with hearing loss\, chasing after her four kids or testing new recipes in the kitchen. \nMichelle believes every family deserves to feel informed\, supported and empowered—not overwhelmed. She is heavily involved in the hearing gene therapy program at Boston Children’s Hospital\, both as a genetic counselor and research manager. She is a member of the Translational Hearing Genomics Lab and strives to improve genetic diagnosis through cutting-edge genomics research\, such as through the implementation of a genetic newborn hearing screen\,  while also providing compassionate\, patient-centered care. \n\n\nLee Lochner\, MA CCC-SLP\nLee Lochner is a pediatric speech language pathologist and a parent of a child with hearing loss. As a professional\, she specializes in fostering communication in children with complex communication needs. As the daughter of a pediatric audiologist and the parent of a child with hearing loss\, she has walked a unique journey as she has navigated the healthcare and education systems. The combination of her experiences allows her to offer a rare perspective on hearing loss issues and speech and language development. \n\n\nJoan Hewitt\, AuD\nJoan Hewitt is a pediatric audiologist at Project TALK specializing in intervention for infants and children with hearing loss and complex needs related to hearing loss. He is a Toomey and Newcomb Faculty Fellow recipient\, and Professor of Management at Oregon State University. David earned his Ph.D. in Management from the University of Connecticut\, Storrs. His MBA in Finance and BGS with concentrations in Economics\, English\, and Philosophy are from the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. His teaching areas include leadership and negotiation. His research interests include diversity\, equity\, and inclusion–primarily accommodation\, inclusion\, and career success for deaf and hard of hearing persons and people with other disabilities. His research has appeared in the Academy of Management Review\, Strategic Management Journal\, Journal of Management\, Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology\, Journal of International Business Studies\, Human Resource Management Review\, Journal of Business Communication\, and other leading management publications. He serves on the editorial boards for Human Relations\, International Journal of Human Resource Management and Managerial Psychology. \n\n\n\n \nLisa Yuan\nLisa Yaun has been actively involved with HLAA for 20 years\, serving in leadership roles with the Los Angeles\, Washington\, D.C.\, and Montgomery County\, Maryland chapters. In 2022\, she joined the HLAA Task Force for Accessible\, Inclusive Employment. Lisa has a master’s degree in Assistive Technology & Human Services and completed HLAA’s Network of Consumer Hearing Assistive Technology Trainers (NCHATT) program and Gallaudet University’s Peer Mentoring program for people with hearing loss. Since July 2025\, she has worked at Mayo Clinic as a senior communications specialist\, after nearly eight years at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in public health communications roles. Prior to NIH\, she spent 25 years in entertainment advertising as a production artist in Los Angeles. She has had hearing loss since age 20 and uses a cochlear implant and hearing aid. \n\n\n \nTori Carapelho\nTori Carapelho is the founder of Hear 4 Hope\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals living with hearing loss. She serves on the HLAA Employment Task Force\, is involved in building and supporting HLAA community efforts in Hawaii and serves on the HLAA–Los Angeles Steering Committee. Tori experienced sudden hearing loss in 2021 and is a unilateral cochlear implant user. NOTE: Live attendance for HLAA webinars is capped at 500 participants. \n\n\n\n\nPanelists: \n\n\n \nKendra Hada\nKendra Hada is a San Francisco-based bartender\, mixologist and brand ambassador with more than 10 years of experience in some of New York and the Bay Area’s leading bars and restaurants. Born with severe hearing loss\, Kendra is a vocal advocate for people with disabilities in the workplace\, particularly in the hospitality space\, an area that can be particularly daunting for people with hearing loss. She hopes to raise awareness of the challenges faced and the opportunities for improvement in access through visibility\, empathy and positive practices. Kendra’s bar career began in earnest as part of the opening team for “Sunday in Brooklyn” where she fed her excitement for the creativity and precision bartending requires. Subsequent moves included Tales of The Cocktail Spirited Awards-nominated bar Existing Conditions. In 2023\, Kendra won the Japan Sake and Shochu Makers Association Shochu Cocktail Competition\, and caught the attention of 8th-generation legacy shochu brand\, Nikaido\, who in 2024 named her their U.S. Brand Ambassador.  \n\n\nK. Renee Horton\, Ph.D.\nDr. K. Renee Horton is a compelling\, inspirational\, global speaker and Baton Rouge\, Louisiana\, native. She earned a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from Louisiana State University and a Ph.D. in material science with a concentration in physics from the University of Alabama—the first African American to receive this degree.   Renee’s  love affair with space began when her parents gave her a telescope at age nine and she dreamed of becoming an astronaut. After graduating high school at the age of 16\, she took an Air Force ROTC physical\, where she learned that she had a hearing loss. Her dreams were crushed\, but Renee looked for ways to continue pursuing what she loved.  She found it in her job\, serving as a NASA airworthiness deputy for the Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstrator (EPFD) project.  In 2022\, she served as an Astro Access Ambassador on the charted Zero G flight. Her experiences have inspired her to advocate for people with disabilities and their inclusion in physics.  \n\n\n \nGreg Bawden\nGreg Bawden currently works as the emergency manager for a large regional fire department\, supporting fire department and community preparedness. Previously\, he served more than 25 years as a firefighter and retired as division chief of Support Services. Prior to joining the fire service\, he was the safety manager and a senior project manager for a national environmental engineering firm\, assessing and remediating hazardous material sites across the country. Greg first began using hearing aids in 2007 and received a cochlear implant in October 2025. In 2013\, he was told he would be fired from his job as fire department battalion chief due to his hearing loss. However\, because Greg had proved his value to the department\, he was offered a “non-combat” position with the same department\, where he continued to work for an additional 10 years. Currently\, he designs and leads training events and workshops\, gives presentations and facilitates meetings for regional committees and work groups\, in a variety of settings. \n\n\n \nDave DeBellis\nDave DeBellis has been an engineer for 42 years\, most recently with HP Inc. He has worked in nuclear and fusion power\, solar energy\, military and aerospace\, automotive safety and printing\, in both business and industrial settings. For the past decade\, he has dealt with profound hearing loss\, and functions effectively with a combination of cochlear implant and hearing aid. Dave is also a fitness enthusiast and an outdoors person. \n\n\n\n\n\nModerator: \n \nMichael Noble – Chair\, HLAA Task Force for Accessible\, Inclusive Employment\nMichael Noble is the vice president of global marketing at Senzime\, a Swedish medical device company specializing in innovations in perioperative patient monitoring. With over 15 years of experience in medical device marketing\, he brings a deep understanding of how to connect clinical value with real-world adoption. Born profoundly deaf\, Michael received a cochlear implant at the age of two and has been thriving ever since. His personal journey has inspired a lifelong commitment to advocacy. He currently serves as the president of the board and a founding board member of the Joyful Life Cochlear Implant Fund\, and as chair of the HLAA Task Force for Accessible\, Inclusive Employment\, where he works to expand access and opportunity for people with hearing loss. \n\n\n\n\nHelpful Tips\n\nZoom. The webinar will be held on Zoom. Led by InnoCaption’s Matt Goncalves\, Senior Marketing Director\, and Paul Lee\, Chief Operating Officer\, the session discusses how captioned telephone services can support everyday communication needs\, such as contacting healthcare providers\, VA offices\, employers\, and family members.
