Led by Teresa Goddard\, Lead Consultant for Assistive Technology Services at the Job Accommodation Network (JAN)\, along with HLAA Task Force members Jill Herbold and David DeBellis\, this session will offer expert insights on understanding accommodation rights\, best practices for making requests and addressing employer concerns. Real-world examples will demonstrate effective communication techniques to help foster a more inclusive and supportive workplace environment. \nLearning Objectives:\nBy the end of this webinar\, participants will be able to: \nRecognize common workplace accommodations and their practical applications for employees with disabilities. \nUnderstand the rights and responsibilities of employees and employers under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). \nDevelop and apply best practices for requesting accommodations effectively and professionally. \nLearn strategies to address and navigate common employer concerns about accommodations. \nGain practical experience through role-play scenarios illustrating successful accommodation discussions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPanelists:\nTeresa Goddard – JAN – Job Accommodation Network\nLead Consultant – Assistive Technology Services\nTeresa Goddard joined the Job Accommodation Network (JAN) staff as a Program Assistant in March 2008\, joined the JAN Motor Team as a Consultant in August 2008\, and then transitioned to JAN’s Sensory Team. Teresa now provides expert level consultation and team leadership as a Lead Consultant on JAN’s Sensory Team. In this role\, Teresa fields questions from employees and employers regarding their rights and responsibilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and assists in identifying accommodation solutions for individuals with sensory impairments. \nTeresa’s professional experience includes work as an Educational Speech-Language Pathologist and as an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instructor in Aichi Prefecture\, Japan\, where in addition to classroom teaching\, she led continuing education workshops on collaborative instructional techniques and cross-cultural understanding. \nTeresa earned a Master of Science degree in Speech Pathology and a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology from West Virginia University (WVU). Teresa’s research interests include assistive technology\, trauma informed practices\, and cross-cultural perspectives on disability services. \n\n\n\n\n\nJill Herbold\nJill Herbold\, FSA\, MAAA\, is a healthcare consulting actuary who primarily works with state Medicaid agencies. She is also a managing partner of a consulting practice with 250 employees. Her hearing loss progressed from mild to profound over many years\, and she is now a cochlear implant user. This presentation will describe the strategies\, the players\, the pitfalls\, and “how-to” steps toward achieving legislative attention and action on issues of concern to people with hearing loss.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCynthia Stewart\nTitle\nCynthia Stewart has a bi-lateral severe sensorineural hearing loss resulting from measles at the age of 3. She learned to lip read as a young child and didn’t get hearing aids until the age of 25\, having struggled through school and university to that point. She has had a varied career\, ranging from policy analyst to manager of large public sector organizations\, including King County Airport Director and Deputy County Manager of Thurston County\, WA. She has also had a second career as a group facilitator and mediator and consultant to groups forming new organizations. She now serves as a volunteer chair of the League of Women Voters of WA Lobby Team\, working with the WA State Legislature. In particular\, they will discuss their roles in the December 2022 AstroAccess zero-gravity space flight\, how they got involved\, what they did during their mission and how the initiative helps perpetuate disability inclusion in the workplace. They will also share their general experiences navigating employment opportunities\, internships and STEM education. The panel will be moderated by disability access professional Theodore Shomsky\, CPACC. \nRegister for Webinar \nPresenters: \n\n\n\nVictoria Garcia\, an engineer who leads a team of 20 at NASA and is responsible for systems integration for the upcoming manned missions to the Moon; she was diagnosed with profound hearing loss at birth and now wears a cochlear implant (CI). \n\n\nSheila Xu\, who is deaf\, graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and is now working on a combined graduate degree at the Harvard Kennedy School/Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. She learned ASL in college\, now wears a cochlear implant (CI) and dreams of starting a business that helps people with hearing loss and other disabilities. \n\n\n\n\nK. Renee Horton\, Ph.D. is a graduate of Louisiana State University with a B.S. in electrical engineering and a minor in math in 2002; and a Ph.D. in material science with a concentration in physics\, becoming the first African American to graduate from the University of Alabama in 2011 in this area. She works for NASA\, at first as a student from 2009 to 2011\, and then started her career as a mechanical test engineer in 2012. \n\n\nLarry Guterman is co-founder of SonicCloud and chief customer experience officer of Sonitum\, Inc.
