Captioned telephone technology continues to evolve, meaning tangible advances in the speed, accuracy, and clarity of captions for people with hearing loss. Learn how CapTel’s latest captioning technology lets users choose how their calls are captioned – between fully automated or operator-enhanced options, the advantages of each captioning method, and how to switch methods during a call. Customizable captioning options are yet another way that CapTel provides users with choices – choices of traditional or touchscreen phones, choices between internet or analog service – to match the unique needs of individuals with hearing loss.

John Kinstler is the outreach marketing manager and Braille services product manager for CapTel, Inc. With more than 20 years’ experience in the telecommunications industry, he is on the board of directors of the Telecommunications for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (TDI), a national consumer advocacy group. He also served as president of the HLAA Madison Chapter. John travels throughout the U.S. educating consumers, businesses, and support organizations about telecommunications technology for people with hearing-loss.

Helpful Hints and Tutorials

    • Zoom concerns have been addressed and procedures will be modified as Zoom continues to update their software. The main security issue was with open meetings. When you register, it creates a unique link for a password protected session.
       
    • Use a computer. If possible, attend the meeting on a computer rather than via a smart phone or iPad. This will give you the best layout to view the captions as well as other meeting features.
  • Update Zoom. Make sure to upgrade to the latest version of Zoom.
  • Captions. HLAA Webinars are open or closed captioned. Subtitles will be visible at the bottom of the meeting zoom screen.
     
  • Check your time zone. This meeting will take place live at 4 p.m. ET, 3 p.m. CT, 2 p.m., MT and 1 p.m. PT. If you are in a different time zone, please adjust the time so you do not miss the meeting.
