HLAA Webinar: An Answer for Beethoven: Making Music with a Hearing Loss in 2020

December 11, 2020 @ 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Join by computer or mobile device.
2020 is the 250th birthday of the composer Ludwig van Beethoven. While Beethoven had very few resources as a musician and composer in the 1850s to cope with his increasing deafness, in 2020 we have more resources. In this webinar, Wendy will talk about strategies and devices she uses to make music with a hearing loss and end with a discussion about her nonprofit, the Association of Adult Musicians with Hearing Loss.

Date: December 11, 2020

Time: 4 p.m. ET, 3 p.m. CT, 2 p.m. MT, 1 p.m. PT

Speaker: Wendy Cheng, Association of Adult Musicians with Hearing Loss

Two years after starting piano lessons at age 7, Wendy was diagnosed with a significant bilateral hearing loss. She is a passionate amateur musician who wears bilateral cochlear implants and plays viola, piano and handbells. She has also directed a handbell choir at the federal agency where she works and led handchime workshops during HLAA conventions whenever possible.

Helpful Hints and Tutorials

  • Zoom concerns have been addressed and procedures will be modified as Zoom continues to update their software. The main security issue was with open meetings. When you register, it creates a unique link for a password protected session.
  • Use a computer. If possible, attend the meeting on a computer rather than via a smart phone or iPad. This will give you the best layout to view the captions as well as other meeting features.

  • Captions. HLAA Webinars are open or closed captioned. Subtitles will be visible at the bottom of the meeting zoom screen.
  • Check your time zone. This meeting will take place live at 4 p.m. ET, 3 p.m. CT, 2 p.m. MT and 1 p.m. PT. If you are in a different time zone, please adjust the time so you do not miss the meeting.

NOTE: HLAA does not offer Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for participation in our webinars.
