Guide for Effective Communication in Health Care
Co-Authors: Toni Iacolucci, M.S.W. and Jody Prysock, M.S., C.I.
As part of HLAA’s Communication Access in Health Care program, the Guide for Effective Communication in Health Care was created for patients, companions, all members of the health care team, administrators and support staff. It provides information, resources and tools to help improve communication in medical settings. The Guide can help hospitals, facilities and private offices follow federal, state and local laws, regulations and health care standards, and allow patients to ask for and receive the services that ensure safe and effective communication.
Communication Access Plan (CAP)
A Communication Access Plan (CAP) is a one-page form that will document a patient’s hearing status and communication needs. A completed CAP can help ensure that patients and providers communicate effectively using the appropriate aids and services.
