Barbara Kelley Executive Director
Barbara Kelley is the executive director of the Hearing Loss Association of America. As HLAA’s chief executive officer since March 2016, she is the primary spokesperson for the organization. She is responsible for overseeing the administration, programs, and strategic plan of the organization. Other key duties include fundraising, advocacy, marketing/media relations, and community outreach. She can be seen and heard on the PBS Newshour, NPR, CNN, NBC, The New York Times, The Washington Post, AARP Magazine, WebMD, and other major media outlets. Before becoming executive director she was deputy executive director, director of publications. and long-time editor of the organization’s award-winning magazine. Her published works over the past few decades have established lexicon, changed mindsets and influenced policy and legislation in the hearing health care field. Barbara serves on various boards and coalitions, among them: the National Institutes of Health Council of Councils. The Council advises the NIH Director on matters related to the policies and activities of the Division of Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives (DPCPSI). The NIH Reform Act of 2006, passed by Congress in December 2006, and signed into law by the President in January 2007, established the Council of Councils. She also serves on the NIH Disability Research Working Group and completed a three-year term on the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders Advisory Council, National Institutes of Health. Other involvement includes the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Consumer Nominating Organization; the Hearing Restoration Research Panel (Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program); Cochlear Implant Community of Action board; and the Hearing Health Collaborative board (a standard of care initiative in the U.S.). She has also served on the Federal Communications Commission Disability Advisory Committee and was chair of the Friends of the Congressional Hearing Health Caucus. Barbara is proud to be an Army spouse and is interested in veterans with hearing loss, especially the HLAA Veterans Across America Virtual Chapter.
