HLAA Chapter Development Workshop

Branding and Business Tools for HLAA Leaders

Presenter: Ann Thomas, HLAA Brand Ambassador and President, Diablo Valley Chapter, California

Marketing and fundraising go hand in hand. Basic business tools are important to be able to sustain your chapter or state organization, which enhances your ability to fundraise. Are you prepared? Do you have the necessary business tools in place for marketing and fundraising?

Ann Thomas is a dynamic and award-winning hearing loss advocate. She is president of Hearing Loss Association of America-Diablo Valley Chapter, a member of the HLAA Get in the Hearing Loop Committee, and an HLAA trained Hearing Assistive Technology Specialist.

She discovered she was losing her hearing in 1997 at age 48 and became a member of HLAA in 2008. She would like HLAA to become a household word and has been directing her efforts to that end since becoming a HLAA Diablo Valley Chapter Board member in 2009.
She graduated from the University of San Francisco with a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Behavior/Development, received nonprofit training from the esteemed CompassPoint Nonprofit Services in San Francisco, attended California State Board of Equalization Workshops for Nonprofits, and has experience working with several additional nonprofits.

HLAA Chapter Development Workshop

Amplifying the Next Generation of Chapter Leaders

Chapter longevity depends on a lot of factors. The Austin Chapter had already folded twice and almost folded a third time, and was determined to bring in younger members who would participate in running the chapter, not just attending meetings. These chapter leaders will share their experiences and their tips to help attract the next generation of leaders.

Presenters: Anecia Lockhart, Debra Dietz, and Carrie Leising, Austin Chapter, Texas

Anecia Lockhart was born profoundly deaf and has been wearing hearing aids since she was one year old then was bilaterally implanted with cochlear implants in 2017. She holds a master’s degree in rehab counseling which expanded her awareness on how to advocate and assist individuals with disabilities. During her spare time, she enjoys spending it with her friends, family, and animals including a donkey in the country.

Deb Deitz woke up deaf one morning at the age of 17. After 14 years in silence, Deb was tested for a very early experimental cochlear implant. This Storz 4-channel device was short-lived. This provided only environmental sounds and failed after nine months. Of the 16 devices ever implanted, Deb had one of the three that failed. In 2002 she had a cochlear implant implanted in her left ear. Hearing her daughter’s voice for the very first time in an emotional phone call was the start of her amazing hearing journey being reconnected to sound. These days you will find Deb creating art while listening to music. Catching up on the 30 years of missing music has been a labor of love!

Born with a genetic hearing loss, Carrie Leising has worn hearing devices since she was 18 months old. Always inspired to make a difference, she has a master’s in nonprofit leadership and management, giving her the knowledge to educate, lead and support the HLAA Austin Chapter and other organizations that are close to her heart. In her spare time, she likes to hike, to camp and spend time with her family while sipping a glass of wine.

HLAA Chapter Development Workshop

What Level is Your Chapter? (What Level Do You Want It To Be?)

Beth Wilson headshot

Presenter: Beth Wilson, president, Central Massachusetts Chapter

Every chapter is unique, but many chapters follow a similar path of growth, maturity, and influence. A start-up chapter at level 1 finds that the most controversial subject for discussion is refreshments. A powerhouse chapter at level 5 yields influence and effects positive impact beyond the chapter with hearing access and advocacy in the community. This workshop will provide an insightful (and entertaining) look at chapter level characteristics and provide ideas for reaching the best level for your chapter.

Beth Wilson earned her PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rhode Island. She is retired from Raytheon where she worked for 33 years. Now in retirement, Dr. Beth is teaching online classes as an Adjunct Professor at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. She was born with a hearing loss and has been a life-long advocate for hearing access. She has been a member of the Hearing Loss Association of America since 1986, was the Executive Director from 2001-2002, and is active in the Central Massachusetts chapter.
