Barbara Kelley, the Hearing Loss Association of America’s national executive director, has been part of HLAA in various capacities since 1988. As magazine editor, deputy executive director, and program support in the past, Barbara has been instrumental in the overall growth of the organization. Ms. Kelley is “energized by our members who tell us that HLAA has changed their lives for the better.” Using Zoom technology, Barbara will give us updates and news from the national offices of HLAA. Her presentation promises to be both inspirational and educational. Please join us to meet this remarkable leader of the hearing loss community.

Living On the Fence
Join us at the HLAA Sun Lakes Chapter as we welcome Lynn Meyer, MC, LPC, NCC, for a presentation on the social and emotional issues of people with hearing loss. Hearing loss is often called the invisible disability and affects one’s independence, self-esteem, and ability to interact with people and the environment. With degrees in Counseling and Deaf Studies/ASL, Ms. Meyer offers us a wealth of professional information and personal experience. She is especially skilled in facilitation support for individuals with hearing loss and their family members. Bring your questions and concerns about living with hearing loss 24/7.
HLAA AZ Working Adults Chapter Meeting
Back by popular demand, we welcome Mr. Bruce Kennedy and he will be presenting again on assistive technology for individuals with hearing loss in the workplace and beyond.
Hearing loss can pose barriers in the classroom, the workplace and in the community. There are many new and inexpensive solutions to support individuals with significant hearing loss, and some of them even free. This overview of HAT (Hearing Assistive Technology) will provide information about some of the latest innovations in
tools, devices and strategies that are available to individuals in maintaining independence in their daily lives.
After the chapter meeting, we will be sponsoring a Blood Drive and we hope all will stick around and support the drive

Our January HLAA West Valley Chapter meeting is all bout the Arizona Commission for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing (ACDHH). Michele Michaels is the Hard of Hearing Program Manager and will provide an overview and share the vision of the ACDHH.
Christy Abrahms is new to the Hard of Hearing team. She will briefly share her story of hearing loss, then explain her role as a Specialist.
Vicki Thompson assists people with information related to the free telephone program. At our meeting she will show us the exciting new devices the Commission’s added to the program. For instance, the program now has a visual alerting device that tells you if your smartphone is ringing.

We encourage state and chapter leaders to attend the HLAA State and Chapter Leaders Virtual Meeting on May 15, 2020 at 2 pm ET. HLAA Staff will be on hand to discuss any new updates and be available to help answer questions and address concerns that state and chapter leaders may have during this COVID-19 crisis. Staff will include Barbara Kelley, executive director, Lise Hamlin, director of public policy, and Carla Beyer-Smolin, chapter and membership coordinator. HLAA wants to know how our leaders are doing and how they are managing during this pandemic. Registration is required for this meeting.

Global Alliance of Speech-to-Text Captioning is the only organization that has as their specific mission to be the leading professional authority on speech-to-text captioning, representing all captioners, consumers and industry.
Jennifer Schuck is president of Caption Pros, and provides captioning for any venue, no matter how large or how small. She is committed to providing the best captioning for every consumer, whether one-on-one or in a convention center. She has served as a member and chairperson of the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) CART Community of Interest Committee, a member of the NCRA Certified Realtime Captioner Certification Committee, and chair of the Arizona Court Reporters Association’s CART committee. She co-chaired the NCRA Captioning Ethics Task Force which created the ethical guidelines for captioners. Most recently, she was appointed Treasurer of the Global Alliance of Speech-to-Text Captioning.
