The World Health Organization’s World Hearing Forum (WHF), of which HLAA is a member, celebrates World Hearing Day on March 3 each year. This year, the WHF will release the World Report on Hearing.

The Psychology of Hearing Loss explores hearing loss from a biopsychosocial perspective with particular attention to individual development and personal experience. Feelings and behaviors associated with hearing loss will be explored with additional information on special populations including Veterans and users of cochlear implants.

Speaker:

Don Doherty is a retired Marine Corps combat Veteran (1965-1987) who lost his hearing in Vietnam. He has worn hearing aids since June 1970 and received a cochlear implant in 2020. He retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs in 2016 after 25 years’ service.  He was the education specialist for the National Chaplain Training Center which served more than 1,100 Department of Veterans Affairs Chaplains at over 153 Veterans Affairs Medical Centers nationwide. Don is actively involved with HLAA and has been a member for more than 25 years.

Virtual Workshop: Navigating Your Disability in the Workplace @ Join By Computer or Mobile Device

SMBC, a top-tier global financial group, is hosting a virtual workshop on “Navigating Your Disability in the Workplace” for students and professionals with vision loss, hearing loss, and for people who stutter. The program is organized by SMBC’s Mental Health, Disabilities, and Neurodiversity Employee Resource Group, UNIQUE. The program will be held on Monday, April 5, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. (U.S. Eastern Time). This is a valuable opportunity for participants to receive career advice and to hear from SMBC employees who identify with these disabilities and can share their experiences with their disability in the workplace.

HLAA Webinar: Externally-Led Patient-Focused Drug Development Meeting for People and Families Living with Sensorineural Hearing Loss @ Join by computer or mobile device.

This one-hour webinar will provide an overview of the FDA drug development process as well as the value of Patient-Focused Drug Development (PFDD) meetings. We hope this webinar will spike your interest in being part of this important virtual meeting for the hearing loss community taking place on Tuesday, May 25, 2021.

Speakers:

Larry Bauer is a senior regulatory drug expert with Hyman, Phelps, & McNamara, P.C. and assists medical product industry and patient advocacy organization clients in a wide range of regulatory matters, including new drug and biologic development and approval issues. Prior to this position he worked at the FDA in CDER’s Rare Diseases Program working on policy, education, and science related to rare disease drug development and 17 years at the National Institutes of Health. He has expertise in rare pediatric disease priority review vouchers and designations, expedited programs, and patient engagement including extensive experience guiding patient advocacy groups. He also has served on the National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD) Advocacy Committee.

 

James E. Valentine is an associate attorney with Hyman, Phelps & McNamara, P.C., where he assists medical product industry and patient advocacy organization clients in a wide range of regulatory matters, including new drug and biologic development and approval issues. He also works with clients on clinical trials operations and compliance matters. As an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland School of Law, he teaches a course in food and drug law. Prior to joining the firm in 2014, he worked for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Office of the Commissioner where he facilitated patient input in benefit-risk decision-making and served as a liaison to stakeholders on a wide range of regulatory policy issues.

Dana Sunderland, HLAA Los Angeles chapter member, will moderate the panel on coping with hearing loss featuring couples, married and dating, best friends and parent-child challenges! Panelists will come from a mixed environment–those who are hearing and others who have hearing loss.

It’s going to be an entertaining and provocative discussion on the challenges of mixed relationships. Bring any questions you may have regarding your own communication/relationship issues, and please invite hearing family members, friends and others to attend!
