She earned her Master of Arts degree in Audiology from the University of Maryland at College Park and her Doctor of Audiology degree from A.T. Still University.

Hearing speech in noisy situations is one of the top auditory difficulties for people with hearing loss, even when wearing hearing aids. At GN ReSound, we are always thinking of ways to improve hearing in noise, with upgrades to the technology inside the hearing aid and by leveraging the tech we already use in our everyday lives. This webinar will discuss the latest developments in ReSound technology, including our newest receiver-in-the-ear hearing aid OMNIA. Clinical studies have shown that OMNIA provides the best speech understanding in noise we’ve measured in our products yet. Details on OMNIA’s design and supporting research will be presented, along with other ways our hearing technology can be used to hear your best in noise.

Jenn Schumacher, Au.D. is an audiologist and medical writer with more than a decade of experience in the hearing aid industry. Jenn joined GN Hearing  in 2014. Her current focus is on creating communications related to hearing aids and audiology for hearing care professionals, physicians, and patients. She has prior experience in conducting hearing aid research and clinical trials, in fitting software development and with fitting hearing aids in hospital clinics. Jenn received both her B.A. in Linguistics and her Au.D. at Ohio State University.

Improving Workplace Performance by Understanding How Typically Hearing People Hear and Communicate @ Join by computer or mobile device.

Simply hearing the informational content of words is one thing, but understanding the impact of hearing loss on the brain and body is far wider than most people appreciate. In this webinar, Dr. Ruffin shares both science-based and personal recommendations working in a challenging, fast-paced work environment.

Background:
Hearing loss goes beyond just hearing spoken words:

1) It can worsen social cognition, particularly expressive communication and soft skills.

2) Hearing occurs within the brain, not the ears. The brain undergoes significant changes as a result of hearing loss.

So, the brain’s processing power is diverted to repairing hearing and conversation instead of focusing exclusively on the meaning of the conversation itself and forging strong connections with others. This affects how those with hearing loss process information and express themselves in many settings like the workplace.

What You’ll Gain:
Dr. Ruffin experiences many environments—especially in the workplace—where there is a lot of background noise. He also works with people of all educational backgrounds to process complex concepts on the fly. In this webinar, he will share with you the techniques, grounded in research, that are designed to help those with hearing loss like himself perform at a high-level.

Dr. Chad Ruffin is an ENT Doctor, Cochlear Implant Surgeon and advocate for adults and kids. Born with severe hearing loss, he is uniquely equipped with the skills and experience necessary to improve the lives of hard of hearing patients. Dr. Ruffin completed surgical training at Indiana University, one of the most rigorous otolaryngology residency programs. He also completed advanced training in ear surgery and cochlear implant research as a faculty physician at Indiana University. He is passionate about using his journey as a deaf patient, surgeon, auditory neuroscientist, and hearing technology innovator to help others succeed with hearing loss.

In addition to working one-on-one with patients at his clinic in Seattle, Dr. Ruffin and his team perform innovative research and advocacy for the hard of hearing community.

This webinar explores one of those features: Dialing by Picture, which allows people who use the CapTel 2400i to dial simply by touching a picture of the person they want to call. While convenient for anyone, Dial-by-Picture is especially helpful for people with dexterity or memory issues. Intended specifically for people who use a CapTel 2400i captioned telephone, this webinar demonstrates how to sync your computer/laptop to add pictures to your phone’s contact list, and how to incorporate photos for easy one-touch Speed Dialing.

“The Workplace and the Law — Where It Helps Us, and Where It Doesn’t.” @ Join by computer or mobile device.

John Waldo will present a chronological view of the employment process, including training and licensing, the application and interview process, and then the workplace itself. He will be discussing topics like what accommodations must be offered, what does accessible actually mean, what can employers ask, and what do you have to disclose. He will point out those areas in which the law provides us with strong protections, and those areas where the law helps us less than we might think. He will also be taking Q & A following the presentation.

Presenter: 

Mr. John Waldo is an attorney whose practice focuses exclusively on implementing the benefits and protections of federal and state disability laws for deaf and hard of hearing people, particularly for people who communicate aurally rather than through sign language. This focus combines his 40 years of legal experience and his lived experience with a progressive hearing loss. He was the attorney on a number of the cases leading to national regulations requiring movie theaters to provide caption-viewing devices, a case ruling that live theaters must provide captioning when requested by the patron rather than when scheduled by the theater and on cases requiring providers of online education to caption their material. John and his wife live in Houston, but his practice is nationwide.
