Wireless streaming via Bluetooth® technology has changed the way people who use hearing aids hear and interact with sound. Now, a brand-new version called Auracast™ broadcast audio is available and changing wireless streaming again.
Auracast in conjunction with Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) Audio, will allow hearing aid users to connect to and share multiple sound sources in a variety of public places and with loved ones, all without the need for intermediary devices or third-party apps. In October, ReSound released ReSound Nexia, the first hearing aid that supports Bluetooth LE Audio including Auracast broadcast audio. Details on Auracast and how it can be used with Nexia, will be discussed.

Jenn Schumacher, Au.D. is an audiologist and medical writer with more than a decade of experience in the hearing aid industry. Jenn joined GN Hearing in 2014. Her current focus is on creating communications related to hearing aids and audiology for hearing care professionals, physicians, and patients. She has prior experience in conducting hearing aid research and clinical trials, in fitting software development and with fitting hearing aids in hospital clinics. Jenn received both her B.A. in Linguistics and her Au.D. at Ohio State University.

Join HLAA for the second event in its OTC 101: Ask the Experts Webinar Series sharing important information about over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids.
This exciting new class of products may provide another pathway to treatment for some adults with mild-to-moderate hearing loss. In 2022, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) finalized its rule permitting the sale of OTC hearing aids directly to consumers over 18, which are now available from a variety of retail and online stores. We’re presenting a series of four webinars through spring 2024, designed to answer your questions and clear up confusion.

Yeh, M.D., chief medical officer for AARP Services, Inc. and Kelly King, Au.D., Ph.D., audiologist and program officer at the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), on a panel moderated by HLAA Executive Director Barbara Kelley. Dr. Yeh is a past member of the Advisory Council for the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD).

Dr. Kelly King is an audiologist and program officer at the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). She oversees grants aimed at understanding hearing and hearing loss, as well as various treatments for communication disorders including hearing aids and cochlear implants. Dr. King also leads institute initiatives aimed at making hearing healthcare more accessible and affordable.

Those of us with hearing loss know that it can be difficult to operate in workplaces where everyone assumes normal hearing. Join us for an insightful webinar exploring new technologies that can help even the playing field. We will be discussing assistive listening devices, captioning, video conferencing, and other tools that the presenters – all with hearing loss – have found most useful in a range of workplace situations, including office, travel, restaurant, classroom, and factory floor.
Learning objectives:
- Learn the technologies people with hearing loss have found most effective in the workplace
- Learn strategies to gracefully inform co-workers of hearing loss and get their help in communication
- Connect with the host of other resources available.
Presenters:
Dr. David C. Baldridge, BGS, MBA, PhD is a Professor of Management/Organizational Behavior at Oregon State University. He is a deafened, cochlear implant user, HLAA Accessible, Inclusive Employment Task Force chair, and long-time HLAA member. He has researched the workplace experiences of people with hearing loss for over 25 years, published more than 25 articles and book chapters, and made over 100 conference and workshop presentations internationally.
Jill Herbold, FSA, MAAA, is a healthcare consulting actuary who primarily works with state Medicaid agencies. She is also a managing partner of a consulting practice with over 200 employees. Her hearing loss progressed from mild to profound over many years, and she is now a cochlear implant user. She has been a member of HLAA for over 20 years and is a member of the HLAA Accessible, Inclusive Employment Task Force.
Dave DeBellis is a practicing engineer with HP, Inc. working in the company’s industrial printing division. Sudden and profound hearing loss at age 55 threatened to derail his career. However, with the help of both a hearing aid and a cochlear implant, he has been able to continue to work effectively in his role. Dave is also a member of the HLAA Accessible, Inclusive Employment Task Force.
Tina Childress, Au.D., CCC-A, is an educational audiologist in the mainstream and residential school settings, technology and social media aficionado, late-deafened adult fluent in ASL and a bilateral cochlear implant recipient. With her unique perspective and passion for sharing information through social media, she is a sought out international presenter and motivational speaker for families, adults and professionals on a variety of topics. Her areas of expertise include Hearing Assistance Technology, apps, cochlear implants, advocacy and effective strategies for coping with hearing loss. Dr. Childress is active on many local and national Boards and Committees where she is a strong advocate for accessibility (especially in the performing arts) and disseminating resources.

Our three panelists, who all have hearing loss and have successfully navigated self-employment, will share helpful tips, personal stories and the pros and cons of being self-employed.

Eyra Abraham is the founder of Lisnen, a startup that is changing the landscape of adaptive technologies for people with hearing loss using the latest AI technologies. She’s also a workshop trainer for for-profit and non-profit organizations on subjects like disability inclusion and entrepreneurship. She’s a committee member advancing accessibility at federal and provincial levels in Canada. She participates as a steering committee member for Start Access, an initiative on AI and equity with the American Association of People with Disabilities. Eyra is also a board member at Creative Users Projects, a digital network of artists and creators with disabilities. Building on her hearing loss and technical experiences, her mission is to advance how technologies can positively impact people with disability to gain equal access at home, at work, and in our community. Her impact has garnered attention for her work, winning Canada’s Top 100 Black Women to Watch 2019.
Dr. Anne McIntosh is the president, CEO and founder of Safe’N’Clear. After noticing a barrier with traditional PPE, specifically face masks, she created a solution to help millions of people access inclusive communication. Her modernized design includes a clear window that shows the user’s mouth, allowing the deaf and hard of hearing an opportunity to speech-read and see facial expressions. Safe’N’Clear has also introduced the world’s first FDA-approved transparent surgical face mask with Level 1 and Level 3 protection. Ensuring that clear PPE will become the standard of care in the post-COVID world is a priority for Dr. McIntosh. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Speech Communication from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a master’s degree in Interpersonal Communication from the University of Montana at Missoula, and a Ph.D. in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Texas at Austin.
Shari Eberts is a passionate hearing health advocate and internationally recognized author and speaker on hearing loss issues. She is the founder of Living with Hearing Loss, a popular blog and online community for people with hearing loss, and an executive producer of We Hear You, an award-winning documentary about the hearing loss experience. Her book, Hear & Beyond: Live Skillfully with Hearing Loss (co-authored with Gael Hannan), is the ultimate survival guide to living well with hearing loss. Shari has an adult-onset genetic hearing loss and hopes that by sharing her story, she will help others to live more peacefully with their own hearing issues.
